Pre-Season Outlook
Maybe it's not quite as great of a fantasy setup in Houston as there was for Mixon with the Bengals, but it seems like Mixon once again should have a high-volume role in one of the AFC's best offenses, preserving his standout fantasy value despite losing his enviable role in Cincinnati. The Texans let 2023 standout runner Devin Singletary walk in free agency, and it seems like Mixon is more what offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik had in mind all along for Houston's starting running back. Although Mixon has never been an explosive runner (4.1 career YPC), he's always been able to withstand big volume and otherwise boasts above average receiving skills (81.6 percent career catch rate, 6.2 yards per target). Upon acquiring Mixon from Cincinnati the Texans gave him a three-year, $27 million extension, keeping Mixon one of league's highest-paid running backs and therefore the likely three-down back for Houston in 2024. Dameon Pierce doesn't appear to be much of a threat after averaging just 2.9 yards per carry in 2023.

Analysis: Per Schefter, Mixon's reported deal with Houston -- which runs through 2026, according to Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle -- is for $27 million and includes $13 million guaranteed. Analysis: It was suspected that Mixon could be a potential cap casualty for the Bengals, and that has turned out to be the case. Analysis: Mixon didn't appear on the Bengals' first Week 16 injury report that was issued Wednesday, so his limitations Thursday could signal that the running back picked up the calf issue midway through practice. More clarity on Mixon's situation should arrive during the Bengals' final practice of the week Friday, but Giovani Bernard is the next man up out of the backfield in the event Mixon is sidelined for Sunday's game in Miami or is limited during the contest.

Mixon carried 23 times for 146 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Browns. He also caught three of four targets for 40 additional yards in the 27-19 loss.
Analysis: Mixon gashed the Cleveland defense for 6.3 yards per carry on his way to a new season high in rushing yards. He scored a one-yard touchdown in the second quarter and rounded out his performance with a season best in receiving yardage as well. It's been slow going at times for Mixon this season, but he's averaged 93.8 rush yards per game over the last five while scoring touchdowns in three of his last four. Analysis: Mixon averaged an impressive 5.7 yards per carry against a solid Oakland front while scoring his first rushing touchdown of the season on a three-yard plunge in the first quarter. He wasn't especially involved in the passing game, but his 103 scrimmage yards -- combined with his touchdown -- were an encouraging sign for his fantasy owners.
